Felipe Melo: Drogba will win us trophies

The Galatasaray midfielder believes the signings of the Ivorian forward and Wesley Sneijder could help transform the stature of the club.
Galatasaray midfielder Felipe Melo believes Didier Drogba will help the club to swell its trophy cabinet.

Drogba followed former Inter star Wesley Sneijder to Istanbul in the January transfer window, and his Brazilian teammate believes the signing of the stellar duo will help to propel the club to new heights as it prepares for a Champions League quarterfinal with Real Madrid.

"Their arrival has helped a lot. They are big names who have achieved so much, but there’s nothing big-headed about them. They’re prepared to dig in like anyone else, and that’s been essential," Melo told FIFA.com. "They had a big hand in us reaching the quarters and they’ve been crucial in the Turkish championship.

"Drogba is a role model. He won the Champions League for Chelsea, attracted big crowds wherever he went in China and he’s got a lot of charisma in the dressing room. He’s going to bring us trophies, and we’re full of hope."

Melo also paid tribute to Sneijder, although he admits that memories of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal clash between Brazil and Netherlands - in which Melo was sent off - are too hard to discuss with the Dutchman.

"We have a good relationship but we don’t joke about that game. Obviously, I was happy when he arrived because I knew him from his time at Real Madrid, when I was in Spain," he went on.

"I was happy because he’s a player who can make all the difference, and you’re always happy to have someone like that beside you."
