The number of undocumented migrants who have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to reach Europe has gone to 5 thousand, the highest number by the United Nations.
Only on Thursday about 100 people died after their boat sank off the coast of Italy.
A spokesman for the UN Refugee Agency said that the increase in deaths is alarming and practice of sending thousands of immigrants at the same time makes it very difficult for teams to aid the escape of all.
The UN has urged Brussels to find legal ways to avoid such tragedies in the open sea.
