Putin: Russian army, stronger than any potential adversary

During the meeting with the heads end of defense and security, Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that Russia's army could defeat any potential enemy. "We can already say with certainty that we are more powerful than any potential aggressor ours. No one can overcome us, "Putin said.

His comments came at the end of a year when tensions between Russia and the West have remained strained because of the civil war in Syria. Tensions between them began to deteriorate since annexation by Russia of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in 2014 after Moscow gave support to separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The relationship came to an even lower point, after Russia last year launched a campaign of airstrikes in Syria in support of forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, Russia as well as member countries of NATO have developed a series of military drills near Russia's borders this year. This has led to insist that Russia will respond to any emerging threat from the North-Atlantic alliance.

Speaking at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, Putin said that Russia should be quick to "adjust plans to neutralize potential threats to our country."

Putin's speech came after Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu presented the annual report praising the achievements of the Russian army in Syria and the ongoing efforts to modernize the army.

Shoigu said that Russia has secured its borders with missile warning systems for the first time. He complained about the frequent flights of "drone" Men of NATO in border areas, and announced plans to send more troops to the west of Russia, in the southwest and in the Arctic.

Analysts say Russian military forces still remain materially weaker than the military forces of NATO, however, is gaining ground in technological terms, thanks to the assistance "aggressive" under Putin's command.

Igor Sutyagin, a former senior researcher in "think-tank" over "Royal United Services Institute" in London, said that the Russian army is not the strongest in the world, but added that its performance has improved significantly, especially for because Putin has exerted more control over his army compared with the NATO nations.

"The lack of restrictions makes them better equipped to fight - he said. - They are stronger because if Putin will want to use, he does not need to take advice. He does not need to appear before the Russian Duma, as happens with Capitol Hill-in ".
