Terrorist attack in Jordan, 10 dead
An armed attack on Jordanian city of Karak, has claimed the lives of 10 persons, among them a Canadian tourist and at least four policemen. Gunmen opened fire on two police patrol before entering into an ancient castle and attack a police station there.
Some tourists trapped in the castle, reportedly have been released and police have taken over the complex. Nine other people were reported injured although the number could be higher. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
"The police and security forces, according to officials, immediately surrounded the castle and its surrounding areas and launched a massive search operation. The local media reported that some tourists were released but this could not be confirmed.
While it is not clear how many people were trapped inside the ancient castle. Jordan is an ally of the United States and a member of the US-led coalition that is fighting Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. American forces have trained a group of Syrian rebels in Jordan as well as the Iraqi security forces and Palestinians. Islamic State has previously threatened to demolish the Jordanian border.
In June, the group said it was responsible for a suicide attack that took the lives of six members of the security forces on the border with Syria.
