Canada, 9 dead in 24 hours of drug overdoses in Vancouver
Nine people have died in the last 24 hours in Vancouver due to an overdose of sedatives. The news was confirmed by local authorities.
Mayor Gregor Robertson said Canadian city is experiencing "sad time", adding that other death are yet to come.
"Hard to see better days when we still have not shaken the foundation of this problem," said Robertson.
Drug abuse in Canada took the lives of two thousand persons in 2015. The government has invested tens of millions of dollars for emergencies in public health sector in recent years, but Mayor Robertson says more must be done.
Even Police Chief Adam Palmer called for more help for drug dependents. "Can you imagine that 9 people die for another reason in our town?" Said Palmer.
The city of Vancouver has had an average of 15 months of drug overdose, resulting in a large number of deaths are still under investigation by the authorities.
Most of the deaths occurred in the Eastside area of the city, where narcotics can be easily purchased, the officer said Adam Palmer.
Dead persons had consumed fentanyl, a narcotic analgesic that acts faster and has an effect similar to heroin; and opioid, another narcotic that has effects similar to those of opium and morphine.
Two milligrams of pure fentanyl, that measure 4 grains of salt, enough to kill an adult.
