French parliament approves the extension of emergency


The lower house of the French parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of extension of the state of emergency in place until July 15, 2017 while France remains on alert against the threat of terrorist attacks.

Interior Minister Bruno le Roux, asked parliament to approve the measure, which received 288 votes in favor and 32 against. Extension of the state of emergency on December 10 was proposed by France's new prime minister, Bernard Cazeneuve. Political parties want to show that they react before the threat of terrorist attacks while France prepares for presidential elections in 2017.

France will deploy more police and soldiers into the streets with the aim of confronting militant extremists who plan to strike over Christmas and new year. According to Interior Minister, will have more safeguards to ensure security during the holiday season, because as he points out, is a serious threat.

France remains on alert for new attacks, the followers of the Islamic state, whose bases in Syria and Iraq were bombed by French planes. The jihadist group has urged followers to carry out attacks on French territory.

A state of emergency will end in mid-January while previously been extended four more times. Some Parisians say they feel safer after extending the state of emergency. After the lower house of parliament on Thursday, will be the Senate to be the last word.

The Socialist government declared a state of emergency which gives police additional powers, in November last year, after the attacks of Islamist militants in Paris that claimed the lives of 130 people.
