France, seized weapons ETA, 5 arrested

French and Spanish police have arrested five people during a joint operation to seize weapons available to militant separatist group ETA.

Firearms and explosives were found in the amount Luhosoa city, south-western France, local authorities said.

However, the French lawyer for Human Rights, Michel TUBIANA said that those arrested were activists who had planned to destroy the weapons of ETA, or to surrender to the authorities.

ETA declared a ceasefire in 2011, but has refused to lay down arms. TUBIANA lawyer said he planned to meet with a group of activists, but then did not attend the meeting.

"We hid weapons, our intentions were clear from the beginning," he said. Meanwhile, sources close to the matter said that the arrested persons will be transferred to Paris for questioning by prosecutors.

French Interior Minister, Bruno Le Roux said that "nobody has the right exterminator pleads as weapons." He also said that the arrests were the result of an "excellent cooperation" with the Spanish authorities and "a severe blow to ETA".
